Studio Policies updated 2010

Lesson Format. Four monthly lessons will usually include  three 30- or 45-minute private lessons and a 50-minute group lesson. Group and private lessons include instruction in performing, theory, technique, sight reading, ear training, and music history.

Practice Habits/Instrument. Piano playing must be a top priority if the student and teacher are to be successful. Mastery of playing the piano is acquired through diligent practice! Therefore, it is essential that you (the parent) help your child schedule his/her daily practice consistently and complete the assignments before each lesson.  Choosing a specific daily time for practice creates the best pianists!

Instrument and Posture.  An acoustic piano, tuned once per year, or a weighted digital keyboard is required in order for the student to develop proper piano technic and aural skills. If you are in the process of purchasing an instrument and need guidance, I'd be happy to help.  Make sure your small child is seated properly at the piano, with a foot rest and seat cushion.  The elbow should rest at approximately keyboard level.

Tuition, Fees, and Music. Tuition is $269 (30-min.) or $402 (45-min.) per four-month term or $76/109 per month.  A $10 discount is given when tuition arrives by the 7th of the month.  Books and materials used by the student will be billed to the student or purchased by the student at a music store.  Some music may be “checked out” from the teacher temporarily.

Additional fees and due dates are as follows:

-Yearly Library fee in August (for teaching supplies, copies, books lent, etc.)  $20  This fee also reserves your lesson spot for the new year.

-AIM Festival fees in September (required)  $20

-Federation Duet fees in August (optional)  $15

-Federation Solo fees in December (optional)  $15

Cancellation of Lessons.  No Refunds.  No Makeups.  Trading lessons is encouraged.  If a conflict comes up, you are welcome to trade times with another student on the “swap list."  Should you choose to exercise this option, please inform me of your child’s lesson time change before the lesson.

Termination of Lessons. A 30-day notice or one month’s tuition is required to terminate lessons. For example, if you plan to terminate lessons on May 30, I need to receive notice on April 30. The student will be billed for one month’s tuition in order to terminate without notice. Extenuating circumstances (such as a sudden move from the area) will be taken into consideration.

Recitals and Achievement in Music (AIM.)  Recitals are held at least twice per year. Your child will perform selected pieces, and memorization is required. Participation in AIM is required. AIM is an evaluation program which evaluates the student in the areas of performance, theory, ear training, technique, sight reading, history, and oral reports.  Sunday best dress is appropriate for recitals and AIM day.
